Nutritional supplementation including antioxidants and creatine may be used to augment the health-promoting effects of exercise including HIIT, HIFT, and resistance training.
Astaxanthin Supplementation Augments the Benefits of CrossFit Workouts on Semaphorin 3C and Other Adipokines in Males with Obesity
Exercise and antioxidant supplementation are recognized as efficacious approaches for the prevention and mitigation of obesity-related complications including elevated inflammatory proteins released from fat cells, called adipokines. However, the effects of the antioxidant astaxanthin and intense exercise on inflammatory adipokines are not known. This study investigated the effects of 12 weeks of CrossFit training combined with astaxanthin supplementation on various adipokines in males with obesity. We found significant improvements in adipokines with the combination of supplementation and training producing the most pronounced results. The findings presented in this study indicate that the supplementation of astaxanthin and CrossFit exercise have the potential to be effective therapies in mitigating complications associated with obesity and enhancing metabolic health.
Spirulina Supplementation with High-Intensity Interval Training Decreases Adipokines Levels and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Men with Obesity

Obesity is closely linked to metabolic complications, disease, and the secretion of inflammatory adipokines from fat cells. Intense exercise and antioxidant supplementation are effective at improving obesity, metabolic health, and reducing inflammation. However, the combined use of spirulina, an antioxidant, and high-intensity interval training on adipokines and metabolic health in obesity are not known. This study showed that 12 weeks of HIIT and spirulina supplementation improved a number of adipokines as well as blood lipids in obese males. This investigation underscores the potential of spirulina supplementation and HIIT as a strategy to ameliorate obesity-related complications and enhance overall cardiometabolic well-being in obese males.

In line with our other work, this study showed that 12 weeks of HIIT and spirulina supplementation improved blood glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, body composition, and adipokine profiles in obese individuals. This further highlights the potential for combined use of "antioxidant" supplementation and HIIT as a means to improve metabolic health.
